Helping people perform at their best.
Decisions feel lighter, focus sharpens, and the internal noise that once consumed time and energy begins to settle. From this place, progress becomes intentional rather than reactive.
High performance becomes an inevitability.
Things just got serious.
When you're leading at a senior level, the decisions carry more weight. There are more people relying on you, more competing priorities and less room to get things wrong.
You need somewhere to think before you act.
A confidential space to work through complex decisions, challenge your thinking and see situations from a different perspective. To understand what's really going on, decide what matters most and act with greater clarity and confidence.
Honest thinking, thoughtful challenge and a space to work things through.
Starting something new.
Starting a new senior role is exciting. It's also one of the moments when having someone outside the business to think with can make the biggest difference.
Because you don't get a second first impression.
Together, we can work through the situations you're encountering as they happen, from understanding the landscape and building your leadership relationships, to making the right early decisions, establishing your style and creating momentum.
The aim is to help you find the right answers, faster
You need to hear yourself think.
When you're used to being the person others turn to, finding somewhere to talk completely openly isn't always easy.
You don't necessarily need advice and you certainly don't need someone telling you to work harder.
You need a discreet, intelligent thinking partner, someone removed from the situation who can listen, question, challenge and help you see what you can't always see from inside it.
No agenda. No judgement. No need to perform.
Something isn't quite right.
You might be successful, capable and driven yet unclear about what you really want.
Perhaps you're spending time on things that no longer matter. A decision keeps being delayed. You've become disconnected from what motivates you or you're achieving plenty, but increasingly questioning whether any of it feels meaningful.
At this stage, time matters.
The cost isn't necessarily failure. It's spending another year pursuing the wrong goal, postponing a decision you already know you need to make, or continuing to perform successfully at something that no longer feels right.
How I coach.
Creating the space to be honest, listening beyond what’s being said to what really matters, and turning insight into meaningful movement.
Space to think openly
Step away from the noise
A confidential, non-judgemental environment where you can think openly and explore what is really happening.
Get underneath it
Listen beyond the first answer
The first answer is rarely the whole answer. I'll listen for patterns, assumptions, contradictions and what's left unsaid because that's often where progress is waiting to be found.
Insight into action
Turning thinking into movement
A safe conversation doesn't mean an easy one. I'll challenge what needs challenging and help turn greater awareness into better decisions, meaningful action and positive momentum.
Coaching grounded in the real world.
I've spent more than 20 years leading and growing businesses, building teams, managing through change and making difficult decisions when the answer wasn't obvious.
That experience comes into the coaching room as context not as an instruction manual.
I understand the realities you're operating in. But my job isn't to tell you what I would do.
It's to help you work out what you should do.
Twenty years of understanding people changes how you listen.
Over more than two decades in recruitment, executive search and business leadership, I've had thousands of conversations about people's ambitions, decisions, performance, careers and lives.
I've interviewed, assessed, hired, developed and led people at every stage of their careers.
That experience has trained me to notice more than the words being spoken. Changes in language, assumptions, contradictions, hesitation and the things that are sometimes hardest to articulate.
It's a capability built through more than 5,000 meetings and thousands more conversations and it fundamentally shapes the way I coach.
What people say.
Ajay, Chief Marketing Officer
I approached executive coaching with James Lawson with some initial scepticism and left as one of his strongest advocates. James has an unusual and highly effective style: part strategist, part therapist, entirely human. He asks the questions you don't think to ask yourself, creates the space to actually work through them and brings a warmth and rigour to each session that makes the experience both challenging and genuinely supportive. Over the course of our work together, I noticed a meaningful shift in my confidence and in the clarity with which I approach decisions and leadership challenges. James is thorough, perceptive and invested in outcomes that actually matter to you not just the ones that look good on paper. Unexpected in the best possible way. I'd recommend him without hesitation.
Dan, Partner
I approached James as I was having a difficulty managing my work-life balance, with a risk of burnout. He coached me for a 6 month period, where he outlined both solutions and useful techniques to tackle my issues. Not only am I managing my time better I also received a promotion whilst we were working together! Highly recommended!
Paul, CIO
My time with James has always managed to cut me through to what's important even if I don't realise the root causes. Our time has left me with functional actions and generally very reflective. I've found James now to be a lifeline when I feel in conflict.
Joanne, CEO
James has been outstanding, he consistently challenges my thinking, asks insightful questions, and helps me gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. His approach is supportive, calm, and engaging, and I've already noticed a positive shift in how I respond to certain situations.
SOMETIMES ONE CONVERSATION CHANGES EVERYTHING
You don't need to know exactly what you need from coaching before we speak.
If something isn't quite right, you're facing an important decision or you simply want the space to think properly about what comes next, let's start a conversation.
